Igugu Lami

Igugu Lami by The Special Five was released on the Chocolate City label in the late 1970s, a period defined by the vibrant evolution of South African mbaqanga and soul music. The record emerged during an era when local ensembles were blending traditional rhythms with contemporary western-influenced arrangements, creating a sound that was both culturally rooted and commercially accessible to the urban South African audience.

The album reflects the collaborative spirit of the Chocolate City studio output, which often favored a tight, rhythmic precision aimed at both radio play and dance halls. While specific design credits for this particular release are not widely documented, the cover art followed the standard aesthetic for the label’s catalog—a functional, high-contrast visual approach intended to showcase the group members and distinguish the record on crowded shop shelves, which resonated with listeners of the time as a staple of the local musical landscape.
