Il Pastor Fido, or The Faithful Shepherd, was long attributed to Antonio Vivaldi as a set of six sonatas for musette, vielle, flute, oboe, or violin and basso continuo. Published in Paris around 1737, the work later became the subject of musicological scrutiny when it was identified as the work of the French composer Nicolas Chédeville, who had arranged and pastiched melodies from Vivaldi's other works to capitalize on the contemporary Parisian craze for the Italian baroque style.

This 1976 recording on the Philips label features Jean-Claude Veilhan on the recorder, joined by Blandine Verlet and Jean Lamy. Released during a period of renewed scholarly and performance interest in historically informed baroque interpretation, the ensemble aimed to reclaim the rustic, pastoral charm intended by the original compositions. The recording is noted for its clean, disciplined approach, reflecting the mid-1970s aesthetic of prioritizing instrumental clarity and period-appropriate articulation over romanticized sentiment.
