Where it came from
Un Premier Amour was released in 1962 as the winning entry for France in the Eurovision Song Contest. Composed by Claude-Henri Vic with lyrics by Roland Valade, the song captured the tender, romantic sentiment prevalent in French chanson during the early 1960s. Its victory at the contest helped establish Isabelle Aubret as a prominent voice in the Francophone music scene and remains a cornerstone of her early discography.
The recording was produced by the Philips label during a period of transition for the Eurovision competition, which was then shifting toward more emotive and orchestral pop arrangements. Aubret’s delivery was lauded for its clarity and sincerity, fitting the era's preference for dramatic, high-stakes balladry. The B-side, Poly-Polisson, provided a lighter, more rhythmic contrast, rounding out the single as a representative snapshot of the diverse musical output Philips promoted at the time.
