Where it came from
Released in 1954 by La Voix de Son Maître, the French branch of EMI, Sélection Nº 1 - Voulez-Vous Danser?... served as a quintessential mid-century compilation intended for the social atmosphere of the post-war era. As record labels began to capitalize on the portability and convenience of the long-playing record, this collection aggregated popular dance music of the period, catering to a sophisticated European audience eager for leisure and light entertainment.
The album reflects the design sensibilities of 1950s French commercial packaging, which often leaned into elegant, minimalist typography and evocative graphic imagery to signal a lifestyle of refinement. While the specific personnel behind the cover design remain largely uncredited in general archives, the curation demonstrates the label’s strategy of leveraging its extensive catalog to provide listeners with a consistent mood, a practice that helped solidify the format of the curated music compilation.
