Provenance

Where it came from

Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive, released in 1981, represents a distinct departure from the New Wave sound that defined Jackson's earlier work. Seeking to explore the exuberant energy of 1940s jump blues and swing, Jackson assembled a group of musicians to record faithful, high-fidelity interpretations of songs originally popularized by artists such as Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. The project was conceived as a celebration of the era's rhythmic vitality rather than a satirical pastiche, emphasizing technical precision and authentic arrangements.

The album's visual identity mirrors its retro sonic aesthetic, featuring a stylized cover that evokes the graphic design sensibilities of the late swing era. Released on A&M Records, the record was received by critics as a successful demonstration of Jackson's versatility and his commitment to the craft of big band instrumentation. It remains a notable entry in his discography for its insistence on capturing the spirit of mid-century dance halls through modern recording techniques.
