Released in 1988, Nada Como El Sol emerged as a direct response to the global success of Sting's second solo studio album, Nothing Like the Sun. Following the album's international reception, Sting and A&M Records identified an opportunity to connect more deeply with Latin American audiences by re-recording several tracks in Spanish and Portuguese. The project was conceived as a bridge for fans who primarily engaged with the artist's work through these languages, signaling his commitment to his growing international reach during the late 1980s.

The production sought to maintain the sophisticated jazz-pop fusion established on the parent album, with Sting working alongside producer Neil Dorfsman to ensure the linguistic transitions felt natural rather than performative. The title track, a translation of 'They Dance Alone', gained particular cultural resonance for its poignant commentary on the political unrest in Chile. While the release was marketed primarily as a regional special edition, it is now viewed by collectors as a notable example of late-eighties experimental marketing and an early effort by a mainstream Western pop artist to intentionally localize their discography.
