Where it came from
Kettle was released in 1987 on the independent label Lamia as a collection of recordings by The Chesterf!elds, a prominent group within the UK's C86-adjacent indie-pop scene. The album captured the band's signature jangle-pop sound, characterized by melodic guitar interplay and wry, observational lyrics that defined much of the Bristol music scene during the mid-1980s.
The record was assembled during a period of prolific output for the band, serving as a compilation that gathered earlier tracks and singles to consolidate their growing cult following. It remains a hallmark of the era's independent aesthetic, reflecting the DIY ethos and low-budget production values that allowed bands like The Chesterf!elds to bypass major labels while influencing the development of alternative guitar music.
