Where it came from
Released in 2012 by the archival label Pharaway Sounds, Khana Khana serves as a curated retrospective of Iranian popular music produced during the 1960s and 1970s. This compilation was assembled to preserve a vibrant period of musical evolution in Tehran, capturing a unique intersection where Western-influenced funk, jazz, and psychedelic rock collided with traditional Persian melodic structures and instrumentation.
The collection was compiled to highlight the sophisticated studio craftsmanship of the pre-revolutionary Iranian music scene, which was largely inaccessible to international audiences for decades. The design and track selection emphasize the work of regional artists who integrated global pop sensibilities into the local nightlife scene. Upon its release, the record was well received by music historians and crate-diggers for its role in shedding light on a lost chapter of global music history, offering an authentic sonic snapshot of a cosmopolitan era before the cultural shifts of 1979.
