Klavierquintett A-dur Op. 114 "Forellen-Quintett"

Franz Schubert composed his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, known as the 'Trout Quintet,' in 1819. He wrote it while summering in Steyr, Upper Austria, at the request of the amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner, who requested that the work incorporate variations on Schubert's own song 'Die Forelle.' The resulting composition is notable for its unconventional instrumentation, featuring a piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass, which grants the piece a unique, buoyant resonance.

The 1972 recording released on the East German label ETERNA features a distinguished ensemble led by pianist Walter Olbertz and violinist Karl Suske. This release emerged during a period when the ETERNA label was gaining international recognition for its high-fidelity captures of classical repertoire performed by central European musicians. The interpretation is widely regarded for its disciplined yet lyrical approach, reflecting the established performance traditions of the era and the technical precision favored by the label's producers.
