Klavierquintett A-dur Op. 114 (Forellen-Quintett)

Franz Schubert composed his Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, known as the Trout Quintet, in 1819 while summering in Steyr, Austria. Written for a distinctive ensemble of piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass, the work was inspired by his earlier song Die Forelle and remains a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire for its lighthearted, lyrical character. This particular recording was produced by the East German state-owned label ETERNA, which played a pivotal role in documenting the high-caliber classical performances of the mid-20th-century German Democratic Republic.

This 1975 release features pianist Walter Olbertz alongside members of the Suske Quartet and bassist Walter Klier. As part of ETERNA's long-running series of classical masterworks, the recording reflects the stylistic traditions of the Dresden-based performance school. The ensemble aimed for a balanced, transparent interpretation of Schubert’s score, which was received as a reliable and technically refined addition to the label's extensive catalog, capturing the nuances of the period's Soviet-era classical recording standards.
