Klaviervariationen = Variations Pour Piano Es-Dur Hob. XVII/3 C-Dur Hob. XVII/5 f-Moll Hob. XVII/6

Released in 1975 under the Swiss label Ex Libris, this recording features pianist Rudolf Buchbinder performing a selection of Joseph Haydn’s keyboard variations, including the famous Variations in F minor (Hob. XVII:6). During this period, Buchbinder was actively establishing his reputation as a formidable interpreter of the Viennese classical repertoire, focusing on precision, clarity, and stylistic fidelity. The choice of these particular variations showcases Haydn’s evolving approach to theme and form, ranging from the light, galant character of the earlier C major and E-flat major pieces to the profound emotional depth of the F minor variations, which represent a pinnacle of Haydn’s late keyboard writing.

The production reflects the aesthetic of European classical music recordings from the mid-1970s, prioritizing an unadorned, high-fidelity capture of the piano intended for the discerning listener. Ex Libris, a Swiss cultural institution, commissioned this recording as part of its mission to provide accessible, high-quality classical interpretations to its subscribers. Buchbinder’s approach was noted for its disciplined musicality, avoiding excessive romanticism in favor of an objective, historically informed technique that became a hallmark of his long-standing career as an authoritative Haydn scholar and performer.
