Klavierwerke, Piano Pieces, Pièces Pour Piano

Released in 1990 by Koch Schwann as part of their Musica Mundi series, this recording showcases the virtuosic piano works of the 19th-century American composer and pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Gottschalk was a singular figure in classical music, blending the formal traditions of the European Romantic school with the rhythmic vitality of Caribbean and Creole folk music, creating a unique sound that prefigured elements of ragtime and jazz.

The performance is delivered by German pianist Klaus Kaufmann, whose interpretation aims to capture the delicate balance between technical complexity and the atmospheric, salon-style elegance inherent in Gottschalk's compositions. As part of a series dedicated to exploring overlooked corners of the classical repertoire, the recording was well-regarded by critics for its clarity and for bringing greater visibility to a composer whose work had, for decades, occupied a niche space in the American concert canon.
