Where it came from
George Frideric Handel originally composed his Harp Concerto in B-flat major, Op. 4, No. 6, in 1736 to be performed as an interlude during his oratorio performances in London. The work was intended to showcase the virtuosity of the harp as a solo instrument, a relatively novel concept for orchestral concertos of the time, and it highlights Handel's mastery of the late Baroque style.
This 1966 Archiv Produktion recording features the renowned Spanish harpist Nicanor Zabaleta, known for his technical precision and his role in reviving the harp as a prominent solo instrument in the twentieth century. Conducted by Ferenc Fricsay with the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the release is celebrated for its clarity and historical sensitivity, reflecting the label's commitment to authentic performance practices during the mid-century period.
