Provenance

Where it came from

George Frideric Handel originally composed his Harp Concerto in B-flat major, Op. 4, No. 6, in 1736 to be performed as an interlude during his oratorio Alexander's Feast. Designed to showcase the virtuosic capabilities of the harp during an era when the instrument was rarely featured as a soloist in orchestral settings, the work reflects Handel's penchant for theatricality and melodic accessibility.

This specific recording was produced by Deutsche Grammophon's Archiv Produktion label, which was renowned for its commitment to historical accuracy and high-fidelity sound. Featuring the celebrated harpist Nicanor Zabaleta and the RIAS Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under the baton of Ferenc Fricsay, the performance is widely respected for Zabaleta's precision and the polished, mid-century approach to Baroque repertoire that defined the Archiv series.
