Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester F-dur Op.4 Nr.4 / Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester F-dur Op.4 Nr.5 / Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester F-dur Op.4 Nr.6

Released by the East German state label ETERNA in 1962, this recording captures a collaboration between the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, conductor Kurt Thomas, and organist Johannes-Ernst Köhler. The production reflects the high standards of the Leipzig musical tradition during the Cold War era, showcasing a deliberate, scholarly approach to Baroque interpretation. ETERNA was known for its technical precision and its role in preserving the classical repertoire through the lens of East German institutional support for the arts.

The organ concertos of George Frideric Handel, specifically those from Opus 4, were originally designed to be performed by the composer himself during the intervals of his oratorios. Johannes-Ernst Köhler’s performance highlights the textural clarity and virtuosity required of these works. By utilizing the historical context of the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the recording emphasizes a grand, resonant soundstage that was characteristic of ETERNA’s catalog, earning it a reputation among collectors for both its historical integrity and the specific acoustic signature of the recording venue.
