Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester G-moll Op.4 Nr.1 / Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester B-dur Op.4 Nr.2 / Konzert Für Orgel Und Orchester G-moll Op.4 Nr.3

Released in 1962 on the East German ETERNA label, this recording captures a performance of Handel's organ concertos Op. 4, Nos. 1-3. The project features organist Johannes-Ernst Köhler accompanied by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under the direction of Kurt Thomas. It emerged during a period when the Deutsche Schallplatten label was actively documenting the rich musical heritage of Leipzig's historic institutions, aiming to preserve the precision of classical interpretations for domestic and international listeners.

The production reflects the distinct aesthetic of ETERNA’s classical series, which favored a clean, academic approach to Baroque performance. Kurt Thomas, a conductor deeply rooted in the Bach and Handel traditions, sought a balanced clarity between the organ’s intricate registers and the orchestral textures of the Gewandhaus ensemble. At the time of release, this recording was well-regarded for its technical fidelity and for showcasing Köhler, a prominent figure in the organ world who served as the organist at the Weimar Stadtkirche.
