Where it came from
The 1991 release of the Kozmik remix package reflects the experimental spirit of the early nineties dancehall and reggae-fusion scene. As part of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers' push to cross over into international markets, this Virgin America promo pressing sought to bridge the gap between roots reggae sensibilities and the burgeoning influence of American hip-hop production styles, specifically through the inclusion of KRS-One.
The record features a high-energy collision of styles, with production efforts aimed at placing the Melody Makers on club playlists. While the project is a historical artifact of Virgin's efforts to modernize reggae for global radio, it remains a niche item that underscores the eclectic, collaborative nature of the era's major-label promotional strategies.
