Where it came from
Released in 2017 by the Swedish independent label Sing A Song Fighter, Kora +1 represents a contemporary synthesis of West African musical tradition and Scandinavian folk sensibilities. Lamine Cissokho, a kora virtuoso hailing from a renowned Senegalese griot family, recorded this project to bridge his heritage with his experiences living and performing in Sweden. The album showcases the intricate, meditative resonance of the kora, highlighting Cissokho's technical mastery and his commitment to preserving the oral histories inherent in his instrument.
The album is noted for its clean, minimalist production, which allows the percussive and melodic qualities of the kora to stand at the forefront. Cissokho’s compositions are designed to be accessible yet deeply rooted in the complex polyrhythms of the Mandinka tradition. Upon its release, the record was well-received within the European world music circuit for its ability to maintain a sense of intimacy and authenticity, serving as both an educational exploration of the instrument and a personal reflection on the artist's cross-cultural journey.
