Kudadirwa Kuya Kwapera / Kuri Kwedu Mukoma

Released by the Zimbabwe label in the early 1980s, this 7-inch single captures the infectious sound of the Devera Ngwena Jazz Band, a group that defined the Jiti and Sungura styles during a pivotal era in Zimbabwean music history. The band, led by Jonah Moyo, originally formed as a group of mine workers at the Gaths Mine in Mashaba, naming themselves after the mine's crocodile-infested river. Their music emerged from a working-class context, blending traditional Shona rhythms with Congolese-inspired guitar patterns to create a sound that resonated deeply with the local population during the post-independence period.

The tracks Kudadirwa Kuya Kwapera and Kuri Kwedu Mukoma exemplify the band’s signature clean, melodic guitar interplay and rhythmic drive. Unlike the more complex arrangements of some contemporary urban ensembles, the Devera Ngwena Jazz Band favored a direct, danceable approach that made them one of the best-selling acts in Zimbabwe.
