Where it came from
Released in 1988 by Pathé Marconi EMI, this double-album compilation serves as a comprehensive retrospective of Maurice André, the French trumpeter who is largely credited with reviving the trumpet as a solo instrument in the 20th century. Compiled during the latter half of his prolific career, the release spans two hours of music, drawing from his extensive recordings of Baroque concertos and lighter classical repertoire that cemented his status as a virtuoso.
The album reflects the aesthetic standards of classical re-issues from the late 1980s, prioritizing accessibility and the breadth of André’s technical prowess. As a collection, it was designed to package his most celebrated performances for a broad audience, highlighting his mastery of the piccolo trumpet and his signature melodic clarity. It remains a hallmark of the Pathé Marconi catalog, representing a period when record labels sought to solidify the legacies of master instrumentalists through extensive, high-fidelity archival sets.
