Where it came from
Released in 1972 on the Arion label, La Kora Du Sénégal features the masterful playing of Lamine Konté, a virtuoso of the kora, the traditional 21-string harp-lute of the Mandinka people. Produced during a period of rising international interest in West African traditional music, the recording serves as both a cultural document and a showcase for Konté’s intricate improvisational style, which bridges the gap between deep-rooted Griot history and contemporary performance art.
The album was released as part of the Arion catalog’s focus on high-fidelity world music recordings, intended to preserve the nuances of acoustic instruments for a global audience. The cover art and production were minimalist, placing the focus squarely on the sonic clarity of the kora. Critics of the era noted the album for its serene atmosphere and technical precision, marking it as a quintessential entry for those seeking an authentic introduction to the sounds of the Senegalese tradition.
