Madrigali E Scherzi Musicali Per Voce Sola

Released by the French label Valois in the 1960s, this recording captures a refined interpretation of Claudio Monteverdi’s secular vocal works. The selection draws from the composer's innovative transition from Renaissance polyphony to the expressive, emotionally charged aesthetics of the early Baroque. By focusing on solo voice accompanied by period-informed instrumentation, the album highlights the dramatic declamatory style that defined Monteverdi’s madrigals and scherzi.

The recording features the baritone Bernard Kruysen, renowned for his scholarly approach to art song, alongside instrumentalists like Huguette Dreyfus, a pioneer in the revival of the harpsichord. The production reflects a mid-twentieth-century movement in European classical music to strip away heavy Romantic influences in favor of historical authenticity. Critics of the era frequently lauded this ensemble for their restraint, clarity, and deep understanding of seventeenth-century ornamentation.
