Provenance

Where it came from

The album Magdalith, released on the Polydor label in the mid-1970s, serves as a distinct entry in the experimental folk and sacred music space of the era. Magdalith, a singer of Israeli origin, crafted this work to explore traditional Gregorian chants and liturgical themes through a modern, folk-influenced lens. The project emerged from a period in French music where labels like Polydor were occasionally supporting avant-garde or world-fusion experiments that blended ancient modalities with contemporary studio production.

The design of the record reflects the minimalist, atmospheric aesthetic common to experimental releases of the decade. The arrangements emphasize Magdalith's vocal delivery, stripping away conventional pop structures in favor of a haunting, meditative quality. While the record remained a niche release and did not achieve significant mainstream chart success, it has since garnered a small, dedicated following among collectors of rare French folk and psychedelic spiritual music who value the album for its unique fusion of heritage vocal styles and period-specific production.
