Missa Solemnis (Messe C-Dur / Mass In C / Messe En Ut Majeur)

Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, composed between 1819 and 1823, represents the pinnacle of his late period, written as a monumental expression of his religious convictions and philosophical depth. Intended for the enthronement of Archduke Rudolph as Archbishop of Olmütz, the work ultimately exceeded the liturgical requirements of the time, becoming a massive, symphonic exploration of the mass text that pushes both choir and soloists to their technical and emotional limits.

The 1978 Philips release, catalog number 6769 001, features Sir Colin Davis conducting the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus. Davis was long celebrated for his idiomatic and controlled approach to Beethoven’s scores, and this recording is highly regarded for its balance and structural integrity. By bringing together a distinguished group of soloists including Anna Tomowa-Sintow and Kurt Moll, the production sought to emphasize the work's grandeur and lyrical qualities, earning consistent praise from critics for its clarity and the nuanced performance of the London Symphony forces.
