Where it came from
Mississippi Boweavil Blues b/w Banty Rooster Blues was released by The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band in 2023 as a tribute to the deep roots of Delta blues. The Reverend Peyton, known for his relentless fingerstyle guitar technique and preservationist approach to pre-war blues, recorded these tracks to honor the legacy of Charley Patton, one of the foundational figures of the Mississippi Delta style. The release serves as a bridge between contemporary garage blues and the historical rural traditions that define the band's aesthetic.
The recording was issued on Family Owned Records, the band's independent label, which allows them complete creative control over their analog-forward production philosophy. The design and presentation reflect the raw, stripped-back nature of the performances, focusing on the rhythmic complexity and vocal intensity characteristic of the band's live shows. It was received as a respectful and technically rigorous homage, appealing to fans of both traditional blues history and the high-energy, DIY ethos of modern Americana.
