Where it came from
Released in 1982 by the Polish state-owned label Pronit, this recording features the Cantores Minores Wratislavienses under the direction of Edmund Kajdasz. The ensemble, founded in 1966 in Wrocław, gained international recognition for its specialization in Renaissance polyphony, particularly the works of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. This album captures the ensemble's dedication to period-appropriate choral discipline, reflecting the aesthetic standards of Eastern European early music interpretation during the early 1980s.
The album includes Palestrina’s 'Assumpta est Maria' motet and mass, showcasing the intricate contrapuntal style that cemented the composer's reputation as a master of the Roman School. Edmund Kajdasz, a prominent Polish conductor, sought to highlight the clarity and emotional restraint characteristic of sixteenth-century liturgical music. The production is a notable document of the high-level academic and performance culture fostered within Polish musical institutions during a period of complex political transition.
