Where it came from
Released in 1975 under the Telefunken label as part of their Das Alte Werk series, this recording captures the work of the Studio der Frühen Musik, led by American lutenist and musicologist Thomas Binkley. Binkley was a pioneer in the field of historically informed performance, dedicated to reviving the sonic landscape of the Middle Ages by focusing on original manuscripts and period-appropriate instrumentation rather than traditional interpretations.
The album reflects the ensemble’s commitment to academic rigor paired with an evocative, raw aesthetic that helped bring medieval secular music to a broader modern audience. By utilizing authentic instruments such as rebecs, shawms, and citoles, Binkley sought to strip away the romanticized Victorian filters that had long colored the perception of minstrels, presenting the music instead as a vibrant, rhythmic, and occasionally dissonant element of European history.
