Where it came from
Released by the state-owned Romanian label Electrecord in the 1960s, this recording reflects a broader effort to document and preserve the musical heritage of Transylvania. During this era, Electrecord served as the primary vehicle for capturing classical and folk performances within the Eastern Bloc, often highlighting local composers and historical organ works that might otherwise have remained confined to liturgical or academic settings.
The album features the organist and conductor Horst Gehann, a key figure in the Romanian musical landscape known for his meticulous dedication to Baroque and Renaissance keyboard repertoire. Gehann’s interpretation was designed to emphasize the technical complexity and structural elegance of Transylvanian composers active between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The record is widely regarded by enthusiasts of archival organ music as a significant entry in the Electrecord catalog for its commitment to regional musicology.
