Where it came from
Released in 1968, this single features Arthur Conley’s soulful interpretation of the Beatles’ track Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Produced by Tom Dowd and recorded during a period when Conley was a prominent figure on the Atlantic-distributed ATCO roster, the arrangement sought to infuse the pop sensibilities of the original composition with the gritty, rhythmic signature of Southern soul. The track serves as an artifact of the prolific cross-pollination between British Invasion songcraft and American R&B during the late 1960s.
The b-side, Otis Sleep On, serves as a poignant tribute to Otis Redding, who had tragically passed away in late 1967. As Conley was a protégé of Redding, the track was crafted as a heartfelt eulogy that echoed the musical style Redding helped define. While the a-side captured the chart-topping pop trends of the era, the b-side remains a significant piece of soul music history, documenting the personal and professional grief within the Stax-Volt and ATCO musical families following the loss of their primary icon.
