Young At Heart / Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo

Released in the early 1960s on the ATCO label, this single features the deep, resonant bass vocals of Jimmy Ricks, a foundational figure in rhythm and blues. Ricks gained immense prominence as the lead singer of The Ravens during the 1940s, helping to define the vocal group sound that bridged gospel, jazz, and early rock and roll. His transition to a solo career allowed him to apply his distinctive, gravelly baritone to sentimental pop standards like Young At Heart.

The production on ATCO 6193 reflects the label's commitment to capturing Ricks' unique vocal timbre against sophisticated, mid-century orchestral arrangements. By selecting these specific tracks, Ricks aimed to bridge the gap between his R&B roots and the mainstream pop sensibilities of the era. While Ricks remains a legendary influence among music historians and vocal scholars, this particular pressing is primarily valued by collectors of classic soul and vocal group history for its preservation of his singular stylistic approach.
