Where it came from
Released in 1965 by Deutsche Grammophon, this recording features the Austrian soprano Irmgard Seefried performing a selection of operatic arias. The record emerged during the peak of Seefried’s career, a period when she was widely celebrated for her intimate, intelligent vocal style and her deep connection to the works of Mozart, which feature prominently on this disc. As a cornerstone of the label’s prestigious catalog, the production reflects the high fidelity standards Deutsche Grammophon established during the mid-twentieth century.
The album serves as a definitive showcase of Seefried’s ability to balance technical precision with dramatic nuance. Her approach to the repertoire was noted for its warmth and clarity, qualities that allowed her to transition seamlessly between lighter roles and more demanding operatic passages. The release was well-received by critics of the era, who frequently highlighted her character-driven performances as a masterclass in lieder-influenced opera singing, solidifying her reputation as one of the most versatile sopranos of her generation.
