Organ Music = Oeuvres Pour Orgue = Orgelmusik

Released in 1963 on the VOX label, this recording of Dieterich Buxtehude’s organ works features the acclaimed German organist Walter Kraft. The album was part of a broader effort during the mid-20th century to document the North German organ school, highlighting the intricate counterpoint and expressive qualities of Buxtehude’s compositions. The series was designed to showcase both the historical instruments of Lübeck and the technical precision of Kraft, who was widely regarded as a leading authority on Buxtehude’s organ repertoire at the time.

The production sought to offer a comprehensive exploration of the Baroque aesthetic, capturing the resonant acoustics of historical church organs. By pairing Kraft’s scholarly approach with the reliable cataloging of VOX, the release provided a definitive listening experience for musicologists and classical enthusiasts alike. Upon its release, it was well-received by the critical community for its fidelity and the educational value it brought to the recorded organ repertoire, cementing Kraft’s status as a definitive interpreter of 17th-century German music.
