Organ Works II = Oeuvres Pour Orgue II = Orgelwerke II

Released in 1984 on the Argo label, this recording is part of Peter Hurford’s extensive project to document the organ works of Dieterich Buxtehude. Hurford, a renowned British organist and Bach scholar, recorded these performances in the late 20th century to showcase the intricate, contrapuntal mastery of the North German organ school. The recording is noted for its clarity and Hurford’s precise, rhythmic approach, which sought to bring a sense of structural transparency to works that were foundational to the development of the Baroque organ repertoire.

The production aligns with Argo's long-standing reputation for high-fidelity classical recordings, particularly in the realm of early music and organ literature. Designed to capture the acoustic nuances of the instrument, the release serves as both a scholarly reference and a standard for Buxtehude interpretation. At the time of its release, the recording was well-regarded by critics for its technical fidelity and Hurford’s ability to balance the technical rigor of the compositions with the expressive, improvisatory spirit inherent in Buxtehude's writing.
