Where it came from
Released in 1982 on the German label L+R Records, this album captures the intimate, authentic sound of Archie Edwards, a central figure in the Piedmont blues tradition. Based in Washington D.C., Edwards was a barber by trade whose barbershop on Bunker Hill Road served as a legendary informal conservatory for blues musicians, keeping the regional acoustic style alive long after it had faded from the mainstream spotlight.
The recording serves as a vital historical document of the D.C. blues scene, showcasing Edwards's dexterous fingerstyle guitar and his warm, conversational vocal approach. L+R Records was instrumental in documenting American roots musicians for a European audience, and this release is celebrated by music historians for preserving Edwards's unvarnished repertoire of traditional songs and original compositions, which remain definitive examples of the Piedmont style.
