Paganini

This 1960s Pathé pressing captures Franz Lehár’s operetta 'Paganini', a work that premiered in Vienna in 1925 during the composer's late-career resurgence. Lehár intended the piece to be a star vehicle for Richard Tauber, blending romantic narrative with the virtuosic flair associated with the life of Niccolò Paganini. By the time this specific recording was released on the Pathé label, the work had cemented its status as a staple of light opera, known for its lush orchestrations and popular melodies such as 'Gern hab’ ich die Frau’n geküsst'.

The production features a distinctive ensemble led by conductor Franck Pourcel, who was well-regarded for his ability to bridge the gap between classical operetta and orchestral pop arrangements. The inclusion of soloists like Michel Dens and Andrine Forli reflects the French tradition of mid-century operetta performance, which emphasized charm and vocal clarity. The recording was released during a period when Pathé was actively curating its catalog of European light music, and it is remembered by enthusiasts for its polished, atmospheric sound quality characteristic of the era’s French recording sessions.
