Where it came from
Released under the Voix De Haute-Contre imprint, this recording of Plain Chant Grégorien features the vocal work of Jean Belliard. The album serves as a focused exploration of liturgical chant, a genre rooted in the medieval tradition of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song. By placing the focus on the haute-contre vocal range, the recording highlights the specific historical vocal techniques used to preserve these centuries-old ecclesiastical compositions.
The production reflects a broader late-20th-century interest in the revival and preservation of historical sacred music. Jean Belliard approached the repertoire with an emphasis on clarity and liturgical accuracy, aiming to capture the meditative, floating quality inherent to the Gregorian tradition. Upon its release, the record was recognized primarily by enthusiasts of early music and liturgical performance for its specialized technical delivery.
