Released in 1959, this record represents the inception of Jacques Loussier's Play Bach project, a pioneering effort to blend the structural rigor of Baroque music with the improvisational freedom of jazz. Formed by Loussier’s trio, which included bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros, the album sought to demonstrate that Johann Sebastian Bach’s compositions possessed an inherent swing and harmonic complexity that translated naturally into a modern jazz vocabulary.

The album's success marked a significant moment in the Third Stream movement, garnering widespread attention for its innovative, respectful approach to classical themes. Rather than simply using Bach as a backdrop, the trio meticulously transcribed the original scores and introduced syncopated rhythms, resulting in a recording that was both intellectually rigorous and commercially successful, eventually selling millions of copies and sparking an entire series of Play Bach interpretations.
