Released in 1959, Jacques Loussier’s Play Bach was born from the French pianist's desire to merge his classical conservatory training with his passion for jazz improvisation. Working alongside bassist Pierre Michelot and drummer Christian Garros, Loussier approached the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach not as museum pieces, but as rhythmic structures that could naturally accommodate swing and syncopation. The trio's innovative treatment of the Baroque canon challenged contemporary musical boundaries by demonstrating the structural compatibility between Bach’s counterpoint and jazz phrasing.

The album was released on the Decca label and became a runaway international success, defining the Play Bach Trio’s signature style for decades.
