Chant Grégorien: Les Vêpres Du Dimanche / Les Complies

Recorded in the mid-20th century at the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes in France, this record represents the rigorous liturgical preservation work championed by Dom Joseph Gajard. Solesmes was the epicenter of the revival of Gregorian chant, and these recordings were intended to codify and preserve the rhythmic interpretations and melodic purity of the monastic tradition for a global audience.

The production by Decca brought the acoustics of the abbey to international listeners, emphasizing a spatial, atmospheric capture of the choir that became the industry standard for sacred music. Dom Gajard's conducting focused on the fluidity of the Latin phrasing, moving away from rigid metronomic time to reflect the natural speech rhythm of the texts, a philosophy that deeply influenced 20th-century musicology and the continued study of early Western music.
