Where it came from
Released in 1967 on the Decca label, this recording of Pentecostal chants features the Chœur des Moines de l'Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes under the direction of Dom Joseph Gajard. The abbey, located in France, is globally renowned for its dedicated research into Gregorian chant, often referred to as the Solesmes Method, which seeks to restore the rhythmic authenticity of early liturgical music.
Dom Joseph Gajard served as the choirmaster at Solesmes for several decades, playing a pivotal role in the mid-20th-century revival of plainchant. His work with Decca during the 1960s was highly regarded for its technical clarity and spiritual focus, providing a definitive auditory reference for the monastic tradition. These recordings were designed to preserve the meditative, monophonic purity of the Benedictine repertoire for a wider secular and religious audience.
