Where it came from
This 1985 Deutsche Grammophon release pairs two foundational works of the string quartet repertoire. Beethoven’s Op. 59, No. 3, dedicated to Count Andrey Razumovsky, represents the middle period of his career where he pushed the boundaries of the form, while Haydn’s Op. 76, No. 2, known as the 'Fifths,' showcases the mature structural perfection that set the stage for the genre's evolution.
The recording features the Amadeus Quartet, an ensemble renowned for its long-standing collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon. By the time this pressing was released, the quartet had established a signature style characterized by precise intonation and a refined, warm tone. The recording was produced to highlight the ensemble's seasoned interpretation of these classical pillars, receiving appreciation from contemporary critics for its technical clarity and stylistic continuity.
