Where it came from
Released in 1966 on the Philips label, this recording features the Quartetto Italiano performing Franz Schubert’s haunting Quartet No. 14, widely known as Death and the Maiden, alongside the Quartet No. 12 and the Quartettsatz. The Quartetto Italiano, founded in 1945, was renowned for its meticulous rehearsal process and a collective commitment to a singular, blended sound that emphasized structural clarity over individual virtuosity.
The ensemble's mid-century interpretation of Schubert was celebrated for its intellectual rigor and tonal warmth, marking a high point in their collaboration with Philips. Critics of the era frequently noted that the group brought an exceptional degree of gravitas and poise to the Romantic repertoire, helping to solidify their status as the premier interpreters of the European string quartet tradition during the 1960s.
