Quintet In B Minor Op.115 For Clarinet And String Quartet - Quartet In A Major KVZ 298 For Flute, Violin, Viola And Violincello

Released in 1965 on the Mace Records label, this recording brings together two pillars of the chamber music repertoire: Brahms's Clarinet Quintet in B Minor, Op. 115, and Mozart's Quartet in A Major, K. 298. Mace Records, an American subsidiary of the German label Deutsche Grammophon, was primarily active in the mid-1960s as a vehicle to distribute high-quality European classical performances to a broader audience in the United States at a more accessible price point.

The performances feature the Drolc-Quartett, a highly regarded German ensemble founded by violinist Eduard Drolc in 1950. Known for their precision and stylistic integrity, the group was deeply embedded in the European classical tradition, and their work on this record reflects the meticulous, disciplined approach characteristic of the period's German chamber music recordings. The album served as a classic example of the era's mid-century aesthetic, prioritizing clear, balanced sound production to showcase the intricate interplay between the clarinet, flute, and strings.
