Where it came from
Franz Schubert composed his String Quintet in C Major, D. 956, in the final months of his life in 1828, creating one of the most revered works in the chamber music repertoire. The piece is celebrated for its profound emotional depth and unconventional scoring, which adds a second cello to the standard string quartet arrangement, resulting in a uniquely rich and symphonic texture.
This 1979 London Records release features the Weller-Quartett, a Vienna-based ensemble formed in 1958 by Walter Weller, who had previously served as the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic. Their interpretation is noted for its refined, authentically Viennese approach to Schubert's lyricism. The London Records imprint, a subsidiary of Decca, was instrumental in bringing these high-fidelity recordings of European chamber traditions to an international audience during the late 20th century.
