Where it came from
Franz Schubert composed his String Quintet in C major, D. 956, in the final months of his life in 1828. It is widely considered one of the greatest works in the chamber music repertoire, notable for its unusual instrumentation of two cellos rather than two violas, which lends the piece its profound, resonant depth. The Quartettsatz, or String Quartet No. 12, serves as a complementary, albeit earlier, exploration of his late-period harmonic complexity.
This specific recording was produced by London Records as part of their Stereo Treasury Series in 1975, featuring the Weller Quartet. Led by violinist Walter Weller, the ensemble was highly regarded for its precision and clarity in the Viennese tradition. This release was aimed at making definitive interpretations of core classical repertoire accessible to a wider audience, receiving praise for its balanced audio engineering and the quartet's disciplined, emotive performance.
