Quintett Für Bläser = Wind Quintet / Andante Lamentoso (Streichquintett = String Quintet) / Musik Aus „Die Mutter” = Music From „The Mother” / Serenata In Vano Für Quintett

Released in 1974 by Deutsche Grammophon, this recording features the Vestjysk Kammerensemble performing a selection of chamber works by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen. The collection brings together diverse facets of Nielsen's output, spanning from the neoclassical Wind Quintet, Op. 43, to the evocative incidental music composed for Bertolt Brecht’s play The Mother. This release served as a significant contribution to the documentation of Nielsen’s chamber music during the 1970s, a period when the composer's work was receiving renewed international academic and critical attention for its distinct blend of lyrical tradition and modernist vigor.

The album reflects the high production standards of Deutsche Grammophon during the mid-1970s, characterized by the label's commitment to capturing precise, transparent soundscapes suitable for intimate chamber ensembles. The Vestjysk Kammerensemble, based in Esbjerg, was praised for its technical agility and its authentic interpretation of Nielsen’s idiomatic scoring. By pairing major quintet works with the rare, poignant Andante Lamentoso and the characterful pieces from The Mother, the recording was positioned as a quintessential entry for listeners seeking a comprehensive overview of Nielsen’s chamber aesthetics beyond his better-known symphonic compositions.
