Where it came from
Radio Wave Surfer represents a pivotal moment in the solo career of Holger Czukay, the former bassist and founding member of the influential German krautrock band Can. Released in 1991 on the Virgin label, the album serves as a culmination of his experimental 'dictaphone' sampling technique, where he recorded short-wave radio broadcasts and spliced them into rhythmic, atmospheric soundscapes. This methodology was deeply rooted in his desire to capture the 'unintentional' music of the airwaves, transforming fragmented global broadcasts into cohesive avant-garde pieces.
The album reflects Czukay's long-standing interest in the intersection of technology and human intuition. By treating the radio as an instrument rather than just a broadcast receiver, he pushed the boundaries of ambient and electronic music composition. The design and production reflect a transition from his earlier work with Conny Plank to a more digitized production style, receiving critical appreciation within the experimental music community for its playful, unpredictable structure and its sophisticated manipulation of global sonic textures.
