Where it came from
Rome Remains Rome is a 2018 archival release from the catalog of Holger Czukay, the pioneering German bassist and co-founder of the krautrock band Can. The album serves as a testament to his distinct approach to sampling and tape editing, featuring experimental soundscapes recorded during his later years. It reflects the atmosphere of his legendary studio setup in Weilerswist, where he transitioned from traditional band arrangements to dense, multi-layered collage compositions.
The record was issued by Grönland Records as part of their ongoing effort to preserve and showcase Czukay's innovative body of work following his passing in 2017. The design captures the idiosyncratic spirit of the artist, utilizing aesthetic choices that echo his lifelong interest in the intersection of organic instrumentation and electronic manipulation. It was received by critics as a poignant documentation of an influential experimentalist who prioritized texture and spontaneity over conventional song structures.
