Rome Remains Rome

Rome Remains Rome was released in 2018 by Grönland Records as part of a comprehensive archival project dedicated to the work of Holger Czukay, the influential bassist and founding member of the krautrock band Can. The album serves as a testament to Czukay's experimental sensibilities and his pioneering approach to studio production, which often involved intricate tape-splicing and the layering of global sound samples long before digital sampling became industry standard. The material reflects the artist's idiosyncratic style, blending ambient textures with his signature rhythmic spontaneity.

The release was curated to bring renewed attention to Czukay's solo discography, which has long been celebrated for its avant-garde departure from traditional song structures. In his design and compositional process, Czukay was known for treating the recording studio as an instrument itself, aiming to capture a sense of organic flux rather than fixed arrangements. Following his passing in 2017, this reissue was welcomed by critics and devoted listeners as a vital preservation of his sonic legacy, highlighting his role as a bridge between minimalist drone, world music, and electronic experimentation.
