Schwanensee / Dornröschen Ausschnitte

Released by Decca in 1967, this recording features excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballets, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty. The collection showcases the interpretive vision of conductor Leopold Stokowski, who led the New Philharmonia Orchestra for these sessions. Stokowski was renowned for his lush, highly expressive approach to orchestration, and this release reflects his tendency to curate and spotlight the most evocative melodic themes from the Russian romantic repertoire.

The production serves as a hallmark of Decca’s high-fidelity engineering during the late 1960s, capturing the dynamic range of the New Philharmonia with characteristic clarity. At the time of its release, the album was well-received by audiences who favored Stokowski’s signature flamboyant style, which often prioritized emotional resonance over strict academic fidelity to the original ballet scores. It remains a notable example of mid-century orchestral recording practices and the enduring appeal of Tchaikovsky’s primary dance themes.
